Immigrating to Canada: Express Entry and provincial nomination

The best-known routes to permanent residence in Canada are Express Entry and the provincial nominee programmes. We explain each route and what your file needs.

Express Entry

An online system run by the Canadian government for three programmes: Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades. You create a profile that gets points in the CRS according to age, education, language and experience, and invitations to apply are issued in regular draws to the highest-ranked profiles.

Provincial nomination (PNP)

Each Canadian province has programmes to choose immigrants who match its needs. Some are linked to Express Entry and add a large number of points to the profile, others are applied for directly with the province. Quebec has its own immigration system.

What you usually need

  • An approved English or French language test.
  • An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for many programmes.
  • Proof of work experience with letters from employers.
  • Proof of settlement funds in most cases.
