PhD in Spain

A PhD in Spain is a research stage that ends with writing and defending a thesis at a Spanish university.

How a Spanish PhD works

Doctoral studies in Spain are organised in doctoral programmes, usually managed by a university's doctoral school. Each candidate carries out original research under a thesis supervisor and follows a research plan that is reviewed every year. The PhD ends with the public defence of the thesis before a committee.

Who it is for

A PhD is for graduates who want a research or academic career, or advanced expertise in their field. Most candidates hold an official master's degree, and some programmes accept other equivalent qualifications.

What usually matters

Before applying, it helps to identify a programme and a possible supervisor whose research matches your interests. Programmes usually look at your academic record, your master's degree, a research proposal or statement of interest, and letters of recommendation. Language requirements depend on the programme. Admitted candidates from outside the European Union also need a visa or residence permit to stay in Spain for their research.

  • Organising your application file and following up on admission
  • Sworn translation and legalization of your degrees, and homologation when needed

Requirements vary from one university and programme to another. Message us on WhatsApp and we will review your case.
